A Question of the Day.

What positive role does tradition and custom play in our society?

Custom and tradition are key to our identity. They are woven into our story, reminding us who we are and how we do things. My kids taught me this when they were about 5 & 8. They wanted to know if we were going to bake turtle bread again that year for Christmas gifts, like we had done the year before. When I told them no, they protested loudly, "But Ma, we HAVE to. It's our tradition."

My father died this fall, and I'm discovering this season that reminders of our family customs are comforting and help me maintain an important connection to him.

I also think that custom and tradition at their best provide a culture from which we shape the future. If they retain life it's because they're familiar, but not static.
